After conducting a baseline survey/ research in makindye sabagabo municipality, the proprietor of Mirembe joined ideas with local leaders and influential persons in her area to form a community based organisation in order to be fully registered with authorities and be able to take the vision of skilling a girl-child forward as a group. This therefore led to the beginning of skills training in action at through a vocational school called Mirembe vocational training centre. The centre was and still is in existence to address the challenges of youth in semi – urban areas who are not unemployed and yet not in school.
Sebumu development association is a non – profit organisation because its proprietor/ vision bearer (late Lydia Naluwoza kamya’s) main aim/vision was to see that an African women can be financially stable even if she has not gone to school or has dropped out of school because many young ladies get into relationships which later on turn bitter and they are left with children to support yet without jobs or financial assistance from their partners.
Sebumu therefore has many young people who need support in order to attain skills training and be able to become financially independent especially at such a time( post covid) when many businesses are struggling to get back on their feet and so many young people have not gone back to formal schools because their parents do not have funds to see them through school.
Mirembe came into existence as a project activity of a community based organisation: sebumu development association a local CBO registered with Makindye sabagabo municipal council. The word Sebumu stands for / means TOGETHERNESS. Mirembe Vocational Training Centre though originally was designed for girls only, It also trains young men in vocational and technical courses. This came up due to demand of boy- children who also need vocational skills in order to create employment for themselves since they are the sole bread winners in our society and nation.
Sebumu as an association running mirembe girls has come up with 6 months and 3 months trainings for the many young people who cannot afford 2 year course trainings to enable youths get skills and knowledge for financial sustainability and empowerment.
An individual or organisation can join hands with us in sponsoring church/mosque groups, SACCOS, fellow C.B.O’S youth groups, women and men groups to access such trainings at subsidised costs so that sebumu can reach out to individuals who cannot come to its centre but rather get trainings from their communities.
Organisations/ individuals can also partner with us in our venture to keep the girl – child in school because dropout rates are so high yet these young people get out of school when they are not yet competent in respective skills training.
