Mirembe girls vocational training centre began in 2001 by a one retired social worker the late Lydia Naluwoza Kamya. She set up this institution with the help of friends like CARR GRANT in a bid to address the plight of the girl – child in the semi – urban areas of Makindye Sabagabo municipality and the country at large.
Her focus was on a girl – child in the slummy urban centres who due to early exposure to adult life is prone to early sexual engagement, sexual abuse from relatives and friends, teenage motherhood etc. She thought of skilling these young ladies at a minimal fee because her joy was to see them get financial independence to regain their dignity in the community and be able to take care of themselves and the children they get at such a tender age due to teenage challenges and poverty at home.
The students cover a series of topics ranging from how to use a variety of machines and means of technologies, taking of measurements, pattern making, the use of diverse textiles across various styles and garments.
Course that covers the art of designing beautiful clothing and fashion accessories. These courses look at the work of famous designers and the culture of the time to show students how great fashion designs come to be.
